Grilled Chicken Greek Gyro Wrap

This healthy version of my homemade Grilled Chicken Greek Gyro Wrap really satisfied my cravings for a traditional Greek Gyro.  Although it would have been good with a flat bread or pita , I already had flour tortillas in the refrigerator.

I love tzatsiki sauce and that was my craving.  So, I decided to throw together a grilled chicken Greek wrap for our dinner.  It sure was a quick and easy meal when I wasn’t in the mood for cooking.  Had my husband grill the chicken and I did the chopping.  It all came together in about 20 minutes.

After reading some other recipes for gyros, I found that it isn’t uncommon to use chicken.  It’s also made with beef, pork, and lamb.  I do not have a vertical broiler to prepare the chicken the traditional way and maybe one day I’ll try it, but in the mean time, this worked.  And, if you’re like me, sometimes you want something that is just too complicated or time consuming to make; so, I improvised the best I could and the outcome was perfect.

OK, maybe not perfect, but nearly.  This is one of those experiments that will end up on our menu again.  The only thing I would do different is to plan ahead and have flat bread, or unpocketed pita bread.  Other than that, it was perfect.

You can even count this Grilled Chicken Greek Gyro Wrap recipe as healthy and low calorie.  Using grilled chicken breasts and plain Greek yogurt for the tzatziki sauce, plus all the veggies and herbs, makes this a much healthier version than the traditional.  Yet, you get all the flavor.

Grilled Chicken Greek Gyro Wrap | Recipe

(Makes 4 wraps)

2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
garlic powder
lemon pepper
4 flour tortillas
1-2 tomatoes
2 cups torn lettuce greens
Tzatziki sauce (See recipe below)

Season chicken with garlic powder and lemon pepper.  Grill on a medium high heat approximately 10 minutes on each side until it’s no longer pink inside, but still moist.  I hope the weather is good where you live so you can grill your chicken, but you can always try a kitchen grill for those bad weather days.

When chicken is done, slice in 1/4″ pieces.

To warm up and soften the flour tortillas, roll in a paper towel and microwave for about 15-20 seconds.  (You can heat 2 at a time.)

Take the heated flour tortilla and spread some tzatziki sauce down the middle.  (I like a lot.  You may want less.)

Spread Tzatziki Sauce
Lay several slices of tomato on top of sauce.

Layer tomatoes
Next, layer the chicken slices.

Add chicken slices
Then the lettuce.

Then top with lettuce
Fold up the bottom of the flour tortilla to keep everything from falling out and fold each side to close the wrap.

Tzatsiki Sauce

7-8 oz. plain Greek yogurt
1 c. diced cucumbers (seeded)
1/2 c. chopped green onion
1/4 c. chopped parsley
2 tsp. chopped fresh dill
1 clove garlic
salt & pepper

Chop and remove seeds from cucumber.
Chop green onion, parsley, and fresh dill.In a medium size bowl, combine yogurt with cucumber, green onion, parsley, and dill.
Using a garlic press, squeeze garlic clove into bowl with yogurt mixture.
Add salt and pepper to taste.

And there you have it.  A very easy recipe for a Grilled Chicken Greek Gyro Wrap.  You might want to make extra because they are so good you will want to eat 2 of them.  Enjoy!

  1. You can also use a regular pocket pita. just slice it open about 3/4 of the way, stuff, flip the top back over the filing and roll like you would as burrito in a tortilla. There is a chain sandwich shop called the Pita Pit nearby that does all-out sandwiches and that is how they do it.

  2. I’ve never thought of making chicken gyros…but yours look amazing! And I can always find fresher tortillas than pitas, so I love that option!

    • Thanks, Liz. Yes, the tortillas worked great. I always keep a pack in my frig. I don’t always have a loaf of bread and tortillas are so versatile. I just love tzatsiki sauce and sometimes I just make it as a dip.

  3. The chicken looks so tasty. It reminds me of the food I had in Cyprus on holiday a few years ago. These type of meals are so full of flavour.

    • Hi Corina, Yes the chicken should be moist and flavorful. But, for me, the best part is the tzatsiki sauce. It really makes this wrap one of the best I’ve had.

  4. What an interesting way to warm up tortillas. I always use stove top method and they turn out very uneven. This is a clever way to do gyros. I am thinking of a vegetarian version of gyro right now. You have inspired me. :)

    • If I can do something quick in the microwave, I will. But sometimes I do it on the stove because I want them to have a toasty crunch. You can do this with tofu. I think it’ll be wonderful. The tzatziki sauce is my favorite. I think it would make any sandwich taste good.
